Songs from Norfolk - Ben and Harry Baxter
These two were the first English informants encountered by Seamus Ennis
on a recording trip to Southrepps in Norfolk in 1955. Ben, aged 63, was the
main singer but Harry sometimes prompted him. Together they sang the drowning
tragedy, Scarborough. After Seamus had returned to London, Ben would remember
more songs and verses and in the end Seamus returned three times. Although sometimes
Ben could only remember fragments of one or two verses, but over the subsequent
years we have recorded other versions of these same songs and so we are grateful,
particularly to Ben, for providing some interesting tunes and variants of now
well known songs.
